The Underground Railroad

The Underground Railroad gives an overview of the subject, with a focus on local history. Madison played an important part in the Underground Railroad. Many local citizens risked their lives to help slaves escape to freedom, but there were also people who were slavery advocates. Listen to spirituals and hear stories of daring escapes. Each student will also make a “telescope” showing the Big Dipper – a vital reference for escaping slaves. Books, a video and a packet are provided pre-visit. Books and video are to be returned.

Designed for grade 4 :: In school visit only :: 90 minutes.
